Signs Your Boat Hull Needs Cleaning Right Now

By Landon Hull Diver · Updated 2026

Not sure if your hull needs cleaning? Here are the telltale signs that marine growth is costing you performance and money.

1. Your Top Speed Has Dropped

If your boat used to cruise at 30 knots and now struggles to hit 25, hull fouling is the most likely culprit. Even a thin biofilm creates measurable drag.

2. You're Burning More Fuel

When your engine has to work harder to push through drag, fuel consumption goes up. If your fuel bills have crept up without a change in usage, check the hull.

3. The Waterline Looks Green or Slimy

Visible growth at the waterline means there's much more below the surface. If you can see it from the dock, it's time to call a hull diver.

4. It's Been More Than 6 Weeks

In Florida's warm waters, 6 weeks is the outer limit during summer. If you can't remember your last cleaning, you're overdue.

5. Your Boat Handles Differently

Sluggish turns, slower acceleration, or vibration at speed can all point to hull fouling or prop growth. A quick cleaning often solves the problem.

Don't wait — the longer you wait, the harder (and more expensive) the cleaning gets.
